WW1 Trench Foot
One of the most common diseases in the trenches was trench foot. Trench foot was a fungal infection growing on the foot that caused tissues to break down and flesh to rot. This disease could in fact spread up one's leg which then would lead to it being amputated. Trench foot was caused by countless hours and even days of standing in muddy water. This made one's boots and socks constantly wet or damp and the cold or warn conditions added even more problems to the disease. If a soldier was diagnosed with trench foot they were sent home because they could no longer fight effectively.
